About Lawabo
- The idea for Lawabo was born many, many years ago in the head of Schriftlabor founder Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer, and inspired by bathroom ceramics, hence the name. As you would expect it, the shapes are simplified to a minimum and rounded at the edges. The typeface started its life as the title lettering of the mekka blue webcomic in the mid-noughties. It has undergone a plethora of reworkings, and at long last, Schriftlabor member Miriam Surányi cleaned up Lawabo and added the italics.
- Lawabo sports a low cap height and has smallcaps, therefore it is ‘a rounded sans with small caps and smallcaps’.
- 9 figure styles and optional slashed zeros: tabular lining, proportional lining, tabular oldstyle, proportional oldstyle, smallcap, subscript, superscript, denominator and numerator (for fractions)
- Each Lawabo font contains no less than 850 glyphs, including the capital German sharp S. The complete family of 12 fonts has more than 10,000 glyphs.
- Lawabo has combining accents that allow you to put any accent on any letter. Yes, even a hungarumlaut on an x or a ring on the v: x̋v̊.

The People behind Lawabo
Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer
Rainer Erich (‘Eric’) Scheichelbauer was born in Vienna, and studied photography, philosophy and Dutch. Today, he creates and produces typefaces, teaches type design, and translates Dutch books into German. Internationally, he is known for his involvement with the font editor Glyphs, for which he has been writing tutorials and handbooks.
Miriam Surányi
Miriam Surányi graduated from the Graphische in Vienna with emphasis on typography. There she participated in a two-year type design curriculum. Today, alongside her daytime job as type producer at Schriftlabor, she is finishing up her first own typeface family.
